Issues: Immigrant Rights

The United States must stop criminalizing those who want to make a better life for their families in the U.S. Diversity is a strength of this country. We should adopt sensible immigration policies that allow families to stay together. The U.S. needs to establish policies that will make immigrants legal residents, such as creating a guest worker program and raising the limits on the numbers of immigrants, especially from countries in the Western hemisphere. By allowing people to immigrate legally and with documentation we can identify those few who are not law abiding. This will give us control over our borders which will better enable us to better deal with terrorist threats, as well as basic law enforcement issues such as human trafficking.

> The U.S. must not construct walls to keep people out. This contributes to the deaths of many would be migrants, disrupts the lives of local property owners, and causes environmental problems.

> The United States must assist democratic forces around the world to bring about meaningful political reforms so people would not have to immigrate to the U.S. for political reasons.

> The U.S. must sponsor more assistance to developing countries as well as promote policies of fair trade which helps working class people around the world and decreases the chance that people would emigrate to the U.S. for purely economic reasons.
